City College Community Agenda update: housing, homelessness, economy, taxes, climate among top issues – Oct. 7, 2024 – City Times Media (PDF)

The San Diego City College Community Agenda started with a simple question: What do you want the candidates to be talking about as they compete for your votes?

In order to influence election reporting to focus on issues as opposed to horse-race polling statistics, I utilized “The Citizens Agenda” from NYU professor Jay Rosen as a model. I led an effort by the City Times Media newsroom to ask the SDCC community THE question while inviting more detailed responses and questions. From our 125 responses, I developed a list of agenda issues weighted by the number of mentions.

City Time Media newsroom reporters and visual media producers used the City College Community Agenda as a lens through which to produce over 40 election-related stories including candidate debate reporting I developed that focused on what was said about issues on the community agenda and not what was said about the other candidate. I wrote 22 election-related articles, collaborated on a team focused on the “Housing and Homelessness” issue, and conducted election-related audio and video interviews.

BREAKING: City College men’s basketball advances to state Elite Eight with overtime win over Allan Hancock (updated) – March 9, 2024 – City Times Media (PDF)

With 10 broadcasts of 2023-24 San Diego City College men’s basketball home games behind us, I provided color commentary beside play-by-play announcer Joe Panek for the California State Regional Final game between the Knights and Allan Hancock College on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

I prepared script material for the YouTube broadcast by producing a game preview article and formatting information for easy reference during the game broadcast (PDF example). I delivered live color commentary during gameplay, provided quick analysis during game breaks, halftime, and post-game, and conducted a post-game player interview from the sidelines. After the game, I produced the breaking news article linked above with key game statistics, followed by a later write-thru to include post-game player and coach quotes, video and photo embeds, and updated next-game information.
This broadcast produced 205 views, the most for any one game of the season, of a total of over 1,100 views for 11 games broadcast for the season. The post-game article and broadcast received first place in College TV and Radio/Podcasting at the San Diego Press Club’s 51st Annual Excellence in Journalism & Scholarship Awards and second place in the Communications Showcase at the 20th Annual San Diego City College Student Research Symposium.
